Review: Written
between 1873 and 1884 but not published until 1903 after author’s death. In
1998 it was listed as number 12 of the Modern Library list of 100 best English
language novels of the 20th century.
It is called a semi-autobiographical novel. It covers four
generations of the Pontifex family. The novel deals with the subjects of
family-father and son relationships-England’s educational system and the church
in England during the late Victorian period.
A must read for all lovers of 19th century Victorian literature.
