Summer Reading Book Review: A Farewell to Arms

Book Title: A Farewell to Arms

Author: Ernest Hemingway

Reviewed By: Pamela D.

This is a WWI story of an American, Henry, who has joined the Italian army as an ambulance driver and who has fallen passionately in love with Catherine, an English nurse. They encounter many difficulties as a couple in love during war time. The war story centers around the German attack on Caporetto and the of the retreating demoralized Italian soldiers.

Why you picked it up: This was a Hemingway novel I had not read and was interested in why it was banned in Italy and in some cities in the US. The Italians did not like Hemingway's accurate account of the retreat and in the US it was Hemingway's frank sexual portrayal of the love between Henry and Catherine.

Why you finished it: Hemingway's description of the Italian retreat is an excellent and acurate account and I could not stop reading about it and also I wanted to see how the love story during war time turned out.

Who you would recommend it to: People who like to read modern classic books, books that Hemingway wrote and stories about WWI and the effects of war on the soldiers (men and women) that served.
