Summer Reading Book Review - Enchanted August

Book Title: Enchanted August

Author: Brenda Bowen

Reviewed By: Lynn R.

This is story of four people who rent a magnificent cottage on an island off the coast of Maine.
Rose and Lotte both are moms that need a break. The book jacket says that they can not afford it alone but later describes how wealthy Rose is so that doesn't make sense.
They find two others to share the place. One is a movie star named Caroline, the other is Beverly who just lost a loved one.

Why you picked it up: I chose this book because it sounded like a fun adventure. I was looking for something lighthearted. It is based on the novel 'The Enchanted April' by Elizabeth von Arnim which is a story of 4 women who rent a castle on the Italian Riviera. I was surprised to find that the characters had the same names and similar descriptions. (For example, Caroline is a socialite, not a movie star).

Why you finished it: I finished it because I enjoyed the characters. I liked the twists and turns. It reminded me of 'The Importance of Being Earnest'. Some of it was so unrealistic that it made me laugh, in particular, one of the husband's lines. The wife replies that she doesn't believe him either!

Who you would recommend it to: It would be good for someone that likes romance novels set in Maine. I would recommend it to someone that likes remakes of movies/books. (The Enchanted April was a movie in 1991 based on the book written in about 1922).
