Summer Reading Book Review - The Sentence is Death

Book Title: The Sentence is Death

Author: Anthony Horowitz

Reviewed By: Julie J.

The Sentence is Death is the second book featuring PI Hawthorne and author Anthony Horowitz as himself. Horowitz is the sidekick to Hawthorne and narrator of the story. Horowitz, who has penned Sherlock Holmes books for the Conan Doyle estate, pays homage to the famous detective pair of Holmes and Watson with this series and the storyline in this book in particular. Hawthorne is modeled after Holmes with Horowitz being the Watson type character of the series.

In this second book, Hawthorne and Horowitz help the police investigate the murder of a high-profile divorce attorney who has been bludgeoned to death at his home with a vintage bottle of wine. Curious since the victim, Richard Pryce, did not drink. Even more curious is the three digit code left by the killer on the wall. Together Hawthorne and Horowitz must decipher the meaning and find the killer.

Why I Picked it Up: I picked up the book since I enjoyed the first book in the series, The Word is Murder, and I have enjoyed watching British mystery shows that have been written by Anthony Horowitz. Plus, I love a good mystery.

Why I Finished It: The plot twists keep the story moving and the reader interested and guessing until the very end as to who the killer happens to be. The dry humor that Horowitz weaves in also makes it an enjoyable read.

I’d Give this Book To: I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good mystery with some wit to it. It is also a good mystery book for those who like mystery stories but do not like all the gore that some depict. I especially recommend the audiobook version. The narrator is excellent. He truly brings the characters to life. In addition, if you are a fan of the TV series Foyle’s War; then you will enjoy the production tidbits that Horowitz, who created and wrote the series, weaves in throughout the storyline of The Sentence is Death.
